Dr. Jack Ewel spent 11 years with the US Forest Service in Hawaii where he was director and research biologist at the Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry. Prior to that he was a faculty member for 23 years at the University of Florida, where he is now Emeritus Professor (ecology). His work deals broadly with the structure and functioning of tropical ecosystems, often employing investigator-built communities as research tools. In addition to work on fundamental ecological processes, his interests extend to restoration ecology, forestry, and sustainable land use, particularly in the humid tropics. Most of Ewel’s research has been conducted in Latin America, Florida, and US-affiliated Pacific islands.
